The Best Spooky TV Shows To Watch This Autumn
Nothing, and I mean nothing beats a really good spooky TV series for me, especially at this time of year! Dark evenings, cosy blankets, candles lit and something slightly terrifying on the television – spectacular, give me 14 of them right now. I absolutely LOVVVVE anything with a creepy atmosphere, strange little towns, haunted houses, supernatural mysteries and storylines that you can’t stop thinking about, so here are some new, some old, and some major obsessions of mine.
Widow’s Bay – Apple TV
A strange little island off the coast of New England, superstitious locals and rumours of an ancient curse. Widow’s Bayhas such an interesting premise. The story follows a mayor trying to turn his struggling island into a tourist destination, despite the locals being convinced that something terrible is lurking there. Of course, once the tourists start arriving, the island’s creepy legends begin coming true. I love the whole isolated coastal town setting, and the mixture of supernatural horror, mystery and dark humour makes this one a little different.
From
If you love a creepy small-town mystery, From is definitely one to add to your list. The series follows a group of people trapped in a mysterious town that nobody can seem to escape. As if that isn’t terrifying enough, horrifying creatures emerge from the surrounding forest after dark. I love the idea of an entire town with its own strange rules, unexplained secrets and absolutely no way out. It’s one of those shows where every answer seems to lead to another question, making it almost impossible to stop watching.
Channel Zero: No-End House
The idea behind No-End House is genuinely terrifying. A mysterious travelling haunted house appears out of nowhere, promising a series of increasingly disturbing rooms to anyone brave enough to enter. Except this isn’t your typical haunted house attraction. Each room becomes more surreal and personal, and escaping turns out to be much more complicated than simply finding the exit. I love horror that plays with reality and makes ordinary surroundings feel completely wrong, and this has exactly that sort of unsettling atmosphere.
American Horror Story: Delicate – Disney+
I’ve always loved the twisted world of AHS, and Delicate is such an interesting addition to the series. It follows an actress who becomes increasingly convinced that something sinister is interfering with her attempts to become pregnant. There’s paranoia, disturbing encounters and an unsettling sense that nobody can be trusted. I LOVE the glossy styling, beautiful wardrobes and interiors, and the contrast between the glamorous lifestyle and the increasingly horrifying storyline.
Grotesquerie – Disney+
Dark, disturbing and with the most amazing lead character ever, Grotesquerie follows a detective investigating a series of horrific murders that appear to have some sort of sinister religious connection. As the investigation unfolds, things become increasingly bizarre, and you feel like you’re in some weird fever dream throughout. Created by Ryan Murphy, it’s definitely one for anyone who enjoys horror that’s a little more twisted and psychological.
The Haunting of Hill House – Netflix
Best Netfix series ever. The Haunting of Hill House follows a family whose experiences growing up in a haunted mansion continue to affect them well into adulthood. Moving between the past and present, the story gradually reveals what really happened inside the house. This is the only TV show that’s genuinely scared me before – the scene where the man with the bowler hat comes into the bedroom…!
The Midnight Club – Netflix
Set inside a beautiful but rather sinister hospice for terminally ill teenagers, The Midnight Club follows a group of young residents who meet every night to tell each other terrifying stories. They also make a pact that whoever dies first must try to communicate with the others from beyond the grave. I particularly like this one as it’s broken down into a number of haunted tales.
The Haunting of Bly Manor – Netflix
Another wonderfully gothic series from Mike Flanagan, this one is set in a secluded English country estate where a young American au pair arrives to care for two orphaned children. It isn’t long before strange things begin happening around the house and its grounds. Not as strong as Hill House – but a decent watch nonetheless.
Carrie – Prime Video
Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie is clearly series that belongs on a spooky watchlist. The story follows Carrie White, a teenage girl living under the control of her deeply religious mother while struggling with bullying, isolation and mysterious telekinetic abilities. Mike Flanagan can do no wrong!
The Shards – Disney+
Obsessed obsessed obsessed. Set in the glamorous world of 1980s Los Angeles, it follows a group of wealthy teenagers attending an exclusive private school, where their perfect lives become entangled with the arrival of a strange new student and a serial killer terrorising the city. It’s based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho) and executive produced by Ryan Murphy (woohoo).
Midnight Mass – Netflix
A small, isolated island community, a mysterious new priest and a series of seemingly miraculous events that gradually become something much more disturbing. This is such an atmospheric horror series, with its gloomy coastal setting, religious imagery and growing sense of dread. Some really loveable characters in this one too – thanks to Mike Flanagan and his wonderful way of casting familiar actors.
